Welcome our second week of “Fab app Fridays”! Each Friday, I will be post a new blog entry, reviewing some of my favorite ‘apps’ or applications that I think are FABULOUS on the iOS system, since I use an iPad during some of my therapy sessions. I will try to keep the apps limited to ones that are mostly affordable, or free!
This week’s featured app is:
App name: “Furry Friend” for the iOS system
Price: FREE in the iTunes store
Description: This app is an interactive game with a furry blue monster friend named Lenord, designed for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Lenord will repeat what you say into the microphone on your device (as long as your device’s microphone is enabled, you don’t need any equipment), as well as do a variety of activities like eating, playing, and sleeping when you play with him.
Why I love it: This app is great for younger children and toddlers, anywhere from ages 1 – 5 years old. It’s ideal for little ones who are saying their first words, just learning to talk and babble throughout the day. I’ve used it with some of my kids as a reward or reinforcement at the end of the session, and they love talking or making sounds (even just giggling, Lenord will imitate that too!) so that Lenord does it, too. It’s a fun, low-pressure way to encourage speech and language use, and turn-taking during a conversation.
