Types of Therapy

Speech Impediment

Speech Impediments or articulation delays of “s” “r” “l” “ch” can negatively impact a child’s self esteem and confidence.  Jenny’s Speech online model allows us to individualize the therapy program for each child. Some children are able to produce a difficult sound in one common context but not others.  English is a complex language that has 20 vowel combinations and at least 100 syllable combinations for each consonant. Our goal is for your child to be able to produce each “s” , “r” “l” confidently in every context.

When creating a personalized therapy program, we have had the most success providing intensive therapy for the first week and then offering 2-3 sessions a week.  Each week we provide a list of specific target words that target the speech sound in the specific level of difficulty the child is ready for. Children move from producing the speech sound in isolation, the initial position of single word, the final position of single words and then the medial position.

Week 1      Three 45 minute sessions

Week 2      Three 45 minute sessions

Week 3      Two 45 minute sessions

Week 4      Two 45 minute sessions

Early Intervention (1-5 Years Old)

For children aged 1-5 years old, “online” therapy is not simply a child sitting and watching the computer screen for a 45-minute session. Instead online therapy sessions engage young children and rely on parent participation and parent coaching.  We email parents with common toys, books or household objects to have on hand during therapy. We then have our scheduled session and follow these steps:

  • Parents are provided with optional reading materials, before each session. (PDF)
  • Therapist explains the strategy they want to target.
  • Therapist shares a video of strategy in action by “sharing” her screen with parents.
  • Parents then attempt the strategy with their child while the therapist coaches them.
  • If needed, the therapist can demonstrate the strategy on her own and parents can watch from their screen.
  • Each week parents are given homework. Parents can determine, with the therapist’s assistance, which strategy they want to target during the week.
  • Parents keep track of how the strategy worked during the week so they can provide the therapist with feedback at the next session.
